Staying in the centre of a major city is not for everyone, but then neither is a hotel which requires too much effort to get to and from the sights. Here's where the Athens Ledra Marriott comes in; it's the ideal compromise between the two as it's outside of the centre, but well-located enough to be a simply journey away. How close? Depends on your choice of transport. If you don't mind a walk then an underground station is 15 minutes away or take a bus or taxi from outside the hotel and be in Syntagma Square 20 minutes later. The hotel even provides a complimentary shuttle service themselves.

Arrival sees you enter the spacious and airy lobby, with its bar to the right underneath an enormous chandelier made of more than 3500 glass sections! The Athens Ledra Marriott hotel opened its doors back in 1983, but underwent an extensive refurbishment in time for the Olympic Games in 2004, which also saw the addition of more than 50 rooms and a second Ballroom. Now totaling in excess of 350 rooms, choosing in which to stay will be you main consideration. Refreshingly, all the rooms are spacious no matter whether you select the standard option or a suite.

One of the standout points at the Athens Ledra Marriott hotel are the beds found in all room types. Regular Marriott customers may be aware of the Marriott Revive bedding, so they will need no convincing, but newcomers to the brand should be aware it borders on bed perfection, with custom duvet's, soft cotton linen, plump down pillows and the American-style double-double mattress. They claim to be the only hotel in the city with this arrangement and to offer it regardless of which type of room you're staying in is fantastic. Don't let the busy street outside the hotel put you off either, as all the rooms are double glazed and hardly a sounds penetrates through, and choosing to stay at the rear of the hotel will only mean you miss out on the view!

If the standard room is not to your liking, then the Executive Floor – the fourth – has several inviting suites. Just make sure whichever room you choose, you stay in a forward facing room as each enjoys a beautiful view of the Acropolis. Staying on the fourth floor will gain you entrance to the Executive Lounge, a quiet hideaway where you can enjoy a 'Healthy Start' breakfast in the morning, snacks during the day and a cocktail at night, all included in your room rate. If all this sounds a little too ordinary, then perhaps the Presidential Suite would be more to your taste. Two sizable doors swing open to reveal an elegantly furnished suite, the size of four or more, complete with a private office, meeting room, lounge and a wonderful Acropolis view.

Although Greek cuisine will call whilst you're in Athens, do make sure you sample the Polynesian cuisine available at the award-winning Kona Kai restaurant in the hotel, if not for the food then for the wonderful ambience. The same should be said of the rooftop pool area, where snacks can be enjoyed while taking in the Acropolis view to the right and the ocean to the left. Wherever you decide to stay in Athens, don't dismiss the Athens Ledra Marriott hotel for not being in the middle of the action, as to do so would mean you miss out on this excellent luxury hotel.
