Athens Sofitel airport hotel

Our unbiased review

A holiday to the Greek islands makes for an unforgettable trip, however, getting there can mean a stop at the Athens International Airport and occasionally, a wait before your connecting flight or ferry departure.  In these situations it can be pertinent to book an overnight stay in a convenient hotel, and the Athens Sofitel airport hotel fits rather well.

Walk out of the Athens International Airport and you will find the Athens Sofitel hotel directly opposite, literally less than a five minute walk away.  Despite this close proximity to the Athens airport, noise inside is kept to a minimum, especially in the plentiful executive facilities and conference rooms, in fact, many guests report that they never hear a plane throughout their stay!

Although the Athens Sofitel airport hotel is a separate entity to the airport, you will find features that specifically cater for the needs of passengers and a hotel so close to one.  For example, there are screens dotted about with all the flight information one would require, negating any need to keep dashing over to the terminal for the latest news.  In the rooms shutters replace curtains to keep out the 24-hour lights of Athens airport.

With all this it would be easy to dismiss the Athens Sofitel hotel as ‘just another airport hotel’, but to label it this way would be rather unfair, as it is considerably more.  For a start, it is simple to hop on the Metro and arrive in the centre of Athens thirty minutes later (or take a taxi if money is less of a concern), making it perfect as an out of town base for those with a day or two to spare.

The Athens Sofitel airport hotel is also rather luxurious too, with the beds, mattresses and soft furnishings being of particular quality, just the thing that’s needed after a long-haul flight.  The hotel has a pool which overlooks the runway and a Spa centre too.  The bathrooms are also a delight, featuring a bath as well as a shower and a full array of complimentary toiletries to make travellers feel human again!

This departure (if you will excuse the pun) from the stereotypical airport hotel continues with the restaurants and bars at the Athens Sofitel airport hotel.  Although you can eat and drink over in the airport terminal cheaply and easily, the Karavi restaurant has been voted one of the best gourmet restaurants in Athens, which is really quite an achievement in a country that takes its food as seriously as Greece.  The ninth floor Karavi Bar is worth stopping by for a late night drink too, as the view over the airport is impressive.

So, an airport hotel that thinks it’s a luxurious city hotel?  The Athens Sofitel airport hotel not only thinks it is, but actually proves it too!
